My YA Favorite Character

This is a bit of a different post from what I have been putting out lately, focusing on favorites of mine through my reading versus the typical book review.  Maybe it’ll turn into a series with recommendations in the future, but for today it’s a post all about my favorite character.  There may be spoilers ahead for those that haven’t read the books, but I’ll keep them to events occurring in the beginning of the books, and nothing plot based.

We all have characters that we just can’t get out of our heads, or really don’t want them to.  If someone asked me what my favorite book is I hardly can give a one answer response to that question, but if someone asked me about my favorite character there is one that always comes to mind; Will Herondale.  Part of it is that he is my book crush, but other than that he was one of those characters that felt real in that he hid himself behind his humor and wit.  He wanted the best for those he loves, and would ensure it even if it hurt him even more.  All around, the Infernal Devices trilogy was my favorite of Cassandra Clare’s series, and Will was my favorite of those characters, topping the main character, Tessa.  If you haven’t read this trilogy by Clare then I highly suggest it, especially if you’ve read her other books and liked them!

Will is introduced to us in the a flash of a moment as Tessa tries to get away from the Black Sisters and believes him to be one of them, attacking him with a vase.  For someone who almost got hit with a vase, he seems to take it in stride, and from the very beginning of his time in the novels, he is quick with his wit and humor.  Add in some of his more prominent moments, the humor is full force, and it’s incredibly hard not to crack up laughing even in some of the more serious moments.  Maybe the truth is he’s my favorite thanks to that humor, I’m always down for a good laugh.

Compared to my book reviews this one is a bit shorter, mostly to avoid hitting major spoiler territory.  Part of me wanted to do a list, but like I said Will is the easy answer to the question of favorite characters, the rest of the list would be much harder.  To make up for it here are some quotes from the fictional man himself!

-“What kind of monster could possibly hate chocolate?”

-“Are you implying that shreds of my reputation remain intact?” Will demanded with mock horror. “Clearly I have been doing something wrong. Or not something wrong, as the case may be.”

He banged on the side of the carriage. “Thomas! We must away at once to the nearest brothel. I seek scandal and low companionship.”

-“My name is Herondale,” the boy said cheerfully. “William Herondale, but everyone calls me Will. Is this really your room? Not very nice, is it?” He wandered toward the window, pausing to examine the stacks of books on her bedside table, and then the bed itself. He waved a hand at the ropes. “Do you often sleep tied to the bed?”

  1. I’m the opposite of you. I can choose my one favorite book but not my one favorite character! There are simply too many that I love for various reasons. I’m surprised you didn’t gush about Will as much as I expected (which is a whole LOT more *hahaha*), since you mention him all the time. Honestly, I’m not even sure if my favorite character would even be from my favorite book. This requires serious thinking. Looking through my list of books read in 2018, I would say my favorite character I discovered, and love still, is Tiffany Aching from Terry Pratchett’s Discworld books. Her no-non-sense attitude in a non-sensical world is quite refreshing. The way she THINKS and her thought-processes made me examine my own methods to tackling problems. She’s definitely not perfect and makes mistakes, sometimes huge ones, but always resolves it and doesn’t run away. Her actions are admirable and she treats everyone equally. Although she’s younger than me, she’s become a role model and I wish I had discovered her books when I was a teen!

    1. I’m not even sure if I mentioned I named my Siri Will (British accent) or that I refer to my car as wills since it sounds like wheels. I definitely couldn’t do a top 5 or 10 on fav characters since I love different things about different characters, but Will is like book crush 101 for me, can’t help it! Get me going and I’ll talk a mile (maybe even more on coffee) 🤣

      1. Hahaha, you really named your phone and car after him? That’s true love indeed. I gotta say though, I still haven’t finished Infernal Devices but from what I read, my favorite was Jem. I just have a weak spot for second-leads and gentle, sentimental souls (at least, he was in the beginning, I’m not sure how he is in the rest of the series. Also, I know he’s not technically a second-lead but I’m treating it as such since they weren’t endgame romantically).

      2. First book that might be true, but Clare definitely wrote one of the best live triangles, where both are given equal opportunity and attention. I won’t say more since spoilers but I really liked all three of the leads.
